Cleveland Clinic nurse fired after publishing 'tell-some' memoir.

Memoir's publication leads to 26-year employee's firing

Tuesday, February 19, 2008
Michael K. McIntyre
Plain Dealer Reporter

Adrienne Zurub spent 26 years as a nurse in the cardiac operating room of the country's foremost cardiac hospital, the Cleveland Clinic.
When she wrote her memoir, observations about her career and her employer were bound to be a part of it, offering a rare peek behind the scenes at Cleveland's largest employer.
She self-published "Notes from the Mothership" on Jan. 8.
Two weeks later, she was fired.
"They told me I was fired be cause of the book . . . after 26 years of stellar employment," Zu rub, who has hired a lawyer, said in an interview. "The two administrators who fired me admitted to me they did not even read my book."
But they said they had seen excerpts. And that was enough.
Zurub compares the Clinic in her book to a "prison environment" where nurses, to survive, must have alliances with certain surgeons who afford them protection based on the surgeon's stature within the hierarchy.
"I have observed angry, uncontrolled behavior from so-called educated people that on the street would get them arrested, beat up or shot," Zurub writes. "But that culture was/is considered part of the culture of this environment, a culture of impunity, and thus covered up or taken care of internally or generally tolerated."

The Clinic obviously doesn't see it that way. Though she said the hospital wouldn't comment about a specific personnel matter, spokeswoman Eileen Sheil wrote in an e-mail: "A critical-care patient environment demands teamwork, trust, and strict adherence to patient confidentiality."

The Clinic is a private, nonprofit entity that is not required to release the same kind of information about its business that public corporations must provide. The Clinic's 29,000 workers don't often talk publicly about their working conditions.

Doomsday vault for world’s seeds is opened under Arctic mountain

Ten tonnes of seeds were deposited hundreds of feet inside a frozen mountain yesterday as part of a scheme to preserve all the world’s crops.

Seeds from varieties of potatoes, barley, lettuce, aubergines, black-eyed pea, sorghum and wheat were among the first to be placed in the doomsday vault inside the Arctic circle.

A specially prepared box of rice originating from 104 countries was the first to be deposited in the vault, where it will be kept at minus 18C (minus 0.4F). Thousands more species will be added as organisers attempt to get specimens of every agricultural plant in the world.

Three chambers have been built 125 metres (400 feet) inside a mountain close to the town of Longyear-byen in Svalbard, a Norwegian island about 500 miles (800 kilometres) from the North Pole.

An opening ceremony was conducted at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, as 100 million seeds from more than 100 countries were placed inside. The first day’s deposits comprised 268,000 samples and filled 676 boxes.

The project is intended to provide a failsafe against disaster so that if a seed collection is destroyed in its natural habitat there is an alternative source of supply. Cary Fowler, executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which is behind the initiative, said that by preserving as many varieties as possible the options open to farmers, scientists and governments were maximised. “The opening of the seed vault marks a historic turning point in safeguarding the world’s crop diversity,” he said.

Many varieties of seed kept in the vault are no longer used commercially but it is possible that they will prove invaluable as world conditions change,.

The facility has been designed to keep seeds safely frozen for centuries and, at 130 metres up, the mountain is high enough to be safe even from catastrophic rises in sea levels. Similarly, amid the worst levels of global warming, in which the permafrost of the Arctic island would start melting, the seeds will be safe for up to 200 years.

Jens Stoltenberg, the Norwegian Prime Minister, said: “With climate change and other forces threatening the diversity of life that sustains our planet, Norway is proud to be playing a central role in creating a facility capable of protecting what are not just seeds, but the fundamental building blocks of human civilisation.”

During the opening ceremony he unlocked the vault and, helped by Professor Wangari Maathai, the Nobel prize-winning environmentalist, placed the first seeds inside. Politicians and experts from around the world attended the ceremony at the vault, which is big enough to store 4.5 million samples, adding up to 2 billion seeds.

Some seeds will be viable for a millennium or more, including barley, which can last 2,000 years, wheat 1,700 years, and sorghum almost 20,000 years. Dr Maathai said: “The significant public interest in the seed vault project indicates that collectively we are changing the way we think about environmental conservation.”

CORRUPTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.
The 60 minutes piece was very well done. (SEE LINK BELOW, WATCH IT FOR YOURSELF) 60 Minutes showed the monumental efforts to keep Siegelman out of Alabama politics. How the Federal prosecutor, Laura Canary, that led the charge against him, is the wife of the campaign manager of Siegleman’s opponent in the 2006 Governor’s race. How the main witness against Siegelman was a criminal who lied in order to get a reduced sentence on other charges. How Washington intervened and began to systematically investigate anyone connected with Sielgeman, without cause. How Siegelman never got a dime from the alleged bribery, was never accused of taking money, and was treated like a violent criminal—instead of the popular and successful Governor that he was. And last but not least, how the Justice Department has not released any documents on the case—all members of the Justice department and the Bush White House have refused to testify to congress about the case of Gov. Don Siegelman. See themiddle’s links for more info.]
60 minutes has taken up the issue of why Gov. Don Siegelman sits in a work camp, why Karl Rove and other wanted him taken out of politics, and the dirty stuff that still goes on in the “Justice Department”.

Below is a link to watch a segment from 60-minutes about the former democratic governor of Alabama....this will make your jaw drop to the floor.....especially the very end.
Please watch it.

Religious School Bans Female Referee from Officiating Boys' Game
Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 6:03 AM on February 19, 2008.

The reason given, according to the referees: a woman could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs.

“It’s kind of a sticky situation,” Michelle Campbell said of the decision by St. Mary’s Academy to prevent her from officiating a basketball game

This would be unbelievable if it weren't just so gosh darn believable:

Kansas activities officials are investigating a religious school's refusal to let a female referee call a boys' high school basketball game.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary's Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game.
The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs.

Which are basically that women are second-class citizens who must defer always to the menfolk. Thoroughly modern, Millie.

In good news, her fellow referees are standing by her.

Fred Shockey, who was getting ready to leave the gym after officiating two junior high games, said he was told there had been an emergency and was asked to stay and officiate two more games.
"When I found out what the emergency was, I said there was no way I was going to work those games," said Shockey, who spent 12 years in the Army and became a ref about three years ago. "I have been led by some of the finest women this nation has to offer, and there was no way I was going to go along with that."

Right on.

[Thanks to Shaker KarateMonkey for passing that along.]

LOOKS LIKE THERE IS ALOT OF "RADICAL FUNDAMENTALISM" TO GO AROUND....

The post below makes me think....it is not just Islam that needs reform...but all religions which while they preach love and compassion; harbor hate towards the "other"....
The Religious Right's Jesus Camp which builds "warriors for christ" is no better...the jewish faith that has all but completed the genocide against the Palestinians....is no better.....we are all to blame. We are all complicit, But we can ALSO be part of the solution.

May we all be as courageous as this remarkable women....may we all find her wisdom and see the real enemy is within.

Wafa Sultan speaks up

It is extremely surprising that the Arab financed TV in Dubai would allow this to air. Be sure and watch this, it is so powerful I have no doubt she now has a very large price on her head. I also have no doubt it won't be on the air long .
She is one impressive woman. Here is a powerful and amazing statement on Al Jereeza television. The woman is Wafa Sultan, an Arab-American psychologist from Los Angeles . I would suggest watching it ASAP because I don't know how long the link will be active. This film clip should be shown around the world repeatedly!

SAUDI Arabia's religious police plan to behead a woman accused of being a witch, a human rights group says.Human Rights Watch has asked the country's king to intervene over "absurd charges that have no basis in law". Fawza Falih was arrested and interrogated in the northern town of Quraiyat two years ago and sentenced to death.
The judges who convicted her relied on her forced confession and the statements of witnesses who said she had "bewitched" them. One man claimed he became impotent after Ms Falih cast a spell on him. Witchcraft is considered an offence against Islam in Saudi Arabia.
Ms Falih retracted her confession in court, saying it was extracted under duress and she could not understand the document because she is illiterate.
The death sentence was lifted on appeal, but reimposed in the name of "public interest" soon after.
Human Rights Watch's Middle East director Joe Stork said: "The fact that Saudi judges still conduct trials for unprovable crimes like 'witchcraft' underscores their inability to carry out objective criminal investigations."

Stolen Generation” thing: removing 100,000 mixed blood Aboriginal children from their parents, between 1910 and 1969. This official policy, carried out by governmental agencies and missionaries, was based, of course, on great a combination of eugenics and the idea that the non-indigenous were doing the mixed children a favor, rescuing them from a “race” of inferior stock, so they could live better lives… in internment camps and orphanages. Of course the non-indigenous Australians know a little something about using eugenics, and racial pseudo-science to justify removing people from their homes and their land.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has made a historic apology to the country's Aboriginal people for past mistreatment. Mr. Rudd said past policies of assimilation under which indigenous children were taken from their families were a 'stain on the nation's soul'. From Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory, Phil Mercer reports.
Prominent Australian Aborigine Lowitja O'Donoghue, left, and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd talk after official apology speech, 13 Feb 2008Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has apologized to the 'Stolen Generations'.
These were Aboriginal children who were taken from their families in an attempt to dilute indigenous culture. They were the victims of an assimilation policy that began in 1910 and lasted into the early 1970s.
Mr. Rudd said it was a dark period in the nation's history and issued a formal apology in the nation's parliament in Canberra.
"For the pain, suffering and hurt of these 'Stolen Generations', their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry," he said. "To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry; and for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry."
The declaration has come 11 years after an official report on Australia's past assimilation policies, which urged the government to issue a formal apology.
The conservative former prime minister, John Howard, refused to take such a step, insisting that current generations of Australians should not apologize for injustices of the past.
Opinion polls have suggested that many Australians agree with Mr. Howard's stance and believe it was not necessary to say sorry.
Tribal elders are welcoming Prime Minister Rudd's apology, saying that for the first time they feel embraced and valued by Australian society.

Mr. Rudd says the problems faced by Australia's Aborigines - very high rates of ill-health, unemployment and imprisonment - are so serious that he plans to assemble a so-called 'war cabinet' to address them.
However, tackling such disadvantage has been beyond governments in the past. Indigenous people, who comprise two percent of the country's population of 21 million, have a life expectancy 17 years shorter than other Australians.
The world is changing. Small acts of kindnesses are acts of greatness. Let us all embrace this concept.
For a historical perspective on this issue rent the movie "Rabbit Proof Fence" it receives a 10/10 in my opinion.

The Senate gave in to the White House -- again.
Yesterday, the Senate passed a bill that would grant immunity to telecom companies that helped the government illegally spy on American citizens.[1] And while this is a definite setback, there's still hope. The debate now moves to the House where there are currently much stronger versions of the bill. Tell your Representative not to vote for any bill that provides immunity for telecom companies that broke the law.
Telecom companies should be held responsible for illegally spying on Americans.
http://act.truemajorityaction.org/t/50/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1520
It's impossible to justify undermining the very essence of our constitution in order to protect it. As the White House continues to use fear to drum up support, more people in Washington need to get the courage to stand up. Senator Dodd has already promised that he will filibuster any final version of the bill that includes telecom immunity. The House can make sure it doesn't come to that

A fine example of Our government working for you--$720,000 dollars a day for the Iraq war machine (halliburton, betchel, GE, ect)...but not one dollar for the education of a country, and worse, continued student "enslavement" loans! Thanks to studentloanjustice for the post. Why didnt I hear about this on Fox News????

Blue Dog Democrats Sell out to Banks on Student Loans by studentloanjusticeTue Feb 12, 2008 at 03:37:29 AM PST

I am still dumbfounded at what happened with student loans last week. Please read this. Also, check out our website: www.studentloanjustice.org
Last Week, there was an amendment put up for the Higher Education Act. Danny Davis (IL) was the sponsor. This amendement was simple: Restore limited bankruptcy protections for private student loans. These are the high interest, credit card-like loans that we see commercials for on TV all the time. These loans are not backed by the federal government, yet the student loan industry got the republican Congress to do away with bankruptcy protections for these loans as a part of the 2005 Bankruptcy Bill.

This amendment was thought by most to be a no-brainer. The fact that this language was successfully snuck into the 2005 Bankruptcy Bill at all was the real story. Initially, the industry argued that if Congress removed bankruptcy protetions, it would allow them to make more loans to needy students. This turned out to be a lie. 2 years after, it was shown that loans made to people with low credit scores did not increase.

So there is absolutely no sane argument for removing this important protection for these loans. None. There is absolutely no reason that these loans should be treated any differently from any other type of loan. The fact that this happened is only a testament to the gorilla like strength of the student loan lobbying industry on Capitol Hill.

Under the new, democratic congress, it was assumed that this horrible legislation would be undone quickly.

Indeed, the amendment passed by voice vote initially, but the republicans demanded a recorded vote, and there was a delay. Hours later, when the recorded vote was taken is when the shock came.

29 of 37 of the "Blue Dog Democrats" had voted against this amendment! This was enough to tip the scales (The republicans nearly all voted against it), and the amendment went down in defeat.

This was shocking, and disturbing news. The Student Loan industry has bought off the blue dogs, and they more than willingly sold out the students. Now, with no bankruptcy protections the student lenders will slam these borrowers with every penalty and fee they can think of. Without fear of bankruptcy, these lenders (some of whom are charging interest rates as high as 29%) enjoy power that no other type of lender in the United States enjoys. None.

Exclusive! The FBI Deputizes Business
full story @ http://www.progressive.org/mag_rothschild0308
By Matthew Rothschild, February 7, 2008
Today, more than 23,000 representatives of private industry are working quietly with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The members of this rapidly growing group, called InfraGard, receive secret warnings of terrorist threats before the public does—and, at least on one occasion, before elected officials. In return, they provide information to the government, which alarms the ACLU. But there may be more to it than that. One business executive, who showed me his InfraGard card, told me they have permission to “shoot to kill” in the event of martial law.InfraGard is “a child of the FBI,” says Michael Hershman, the chairman of the advisory board of the InfraGard National Members Alliance and CEO of the Fairfax Group, an international consulting firm.
InfraGard started in Cleveland back in 1996, when the private sector there cooperated with the FBI to investigate cyber threats.
“Then the FBI cloned it,” says Phyllis Schneck, chairman of the board of directors of the InfraGard National Members Alliance, and the prime mover behind the growth of InfraGard over the last several years.
InfraGard itself is still an FBI operation, with FBI agents in each state overseeing the local InfraGard chapters. (There are now eighty-six of them.) The alliance is a nonprofit organization of private sector InfraGard members.
“We are the owners, operators, and experts of our critical infrastructure, from the CEO of a large company in agriculture or high finance to the guy who turns the valve at the water utility,” says Schneck, who by day is the vice president of research integration at Secure Computing.
“At its most basic level, InfraGard is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the private sector,” the InfraGard website states. “InfraGard chapters are geographically linked with FBI Field Office territories.”
In November 2001, InfraGard had around 1,700 members. As of late January, InfraGard had 23,682 members, according to its website, www.infragard.net, which adds that “350 of our nation’s Fortune 500 have a representative in InfraGard.”

"There is a fast-developing free speech battle between the Bush Administration and those who seek to preserve the National Mall in its current status as a treasured location for mass assembly protest.

Every day that Bush stays in office we can anticipate a new assault on civil liberties and the Bill of Rights. It is incumbent upon us all to take action. If Bush gets his way, by the day he leaves office, cherished civil liberties will be eviscerated for decades to come.

The National Park Service (NPS) is undertaking an initiative similar to that launched to exclude protests from New York City's Great Lawn. It will be used to further restrict or ban protest on the National Mall. This is a component of a nationwide campaign of corporate-sponsored organizations working in partnership with government entities that claim that protests, rallies and demonstrations harm grass or "green space" or "natural resources" and must therefore be restricted or banned or shunted off to designated protest pits.

As many ImpeachBush/VotetoImpeach members know, the movement to Impeach Bush was launched by Ramsey Clark on the National Mall on January 18, 2003 at the largest anti-war demonstration since the end of the Vietnam War, numbering 500,000.

At a public meeting called by the National Park Service ten days ago, on Saturday, January 12 in Washington, D.C., representatives from ImpeachBush.org, the Partnership for Civil Justice, ANSWER Coalition, Nicaragua Network, Grassroots America and others demanded that there be no new restrictions placed on the right of the people to access the National Mall for free speech activities."

Take Action Today
Right now, you can email the National Park Service demanding that there be no restrictions on the right of the people to assemble. We have set up an easy to use mechanism that will allow your message to be sent to the National Park Service by clicking this link.

In this crucial election we need you. We are determined not only to elect feminists and help bring out a strong feminist vote, but also to defeat anti-women's rights and anti-civil rights state ballot initiatives. Ten states may have anti-abortion ballot measures and five states may have affirmative action bans on the ballot. We must fight back!

Right now extremists are circulating petitions to add more anti-abortion constitutional amendments on the ballots in Colorado, Montana, and possibly Georgia, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Oregon. These so-called "personhood initiatives" declare that a fertilized egg is a "person" who enjoys "inalienable rights, equality of justice, and due process of the law."

The purpose of these draconian measures, although not mentioned in the ballot measure itself, is to ban not only abortion but to outlaw the IUD and emergency contraception as well. "Personhood" rights for fertilized eggs would also threaten in vitro clinics that aid women in becoming pregnant.

As if this is not bad enough, extremists are working to place anti-abortion initiatives on the California and South Dakota ballots once again. We defeated these efforts in 2006, but antis are pushing the CA parental notification initiative and the SD abortion ban (with only minor modifications) forward once again.

One of the most diabolical anti-abortion petition drives is occurring in Missouri. A new group called "Stop Forced Abortions" is gathering signatures for a proposed initiative that threatens doctors with "medical negligence" if they perform an abortion without meeting strict conditions, such as the procedure being medically necessary in order to prevent the immediate death, or severe threat of substantive and irreversible impairment to a woman. The measure would allow a woman who later regrets her decision to abort to sue the doctor or nurse for so-called "negligence" in pre-abortion screening or counseling.

Disowned by the Ownership Society

By Naomi Klein
The Nation

18 February 2008 Issue

"Remember the "ownership society," fixture of major George W. Bush addresses for the first four years of his presidency? "We're creating...an ownership society in this country, where more Americans than ever will be able to open up their door where they live and say, welcome to my house, welcome to my piece of property," Bush said in October 2004. Washington think-tanker Grover Norquist predicted that the ownership society would be Bush's greatest legacy, remembered "long after people can no longer pronounce or spell Fallujah." Yet in Bush's final State of the Union address, the once-ubiquitous phrase was conspicuously absent. And little wonder: rather than its proud father, Bush has turned out to be the ownership society's undertaker.

Well before the ownership society had a neat label, its creation was central to the success of the right-wing economic revolution around the world. The idea was simple: if working-class people owned a small piece of the market-a home mortgage, a stock portfolio, a private pension-they would cease to identify as workers and start to see themselves as owners, with the same interests as their bosses. That meant they could vote for politicians promising to improve stock performance rather than job conditions. Class consciousness would be a relic.

It was always tempting to dismiss the ownership society as an empty slogan-"hokum" as former Labor Secretary Robert Reich put it. But the ownership society was quite real. It was the answer to a roadblock long faced by politicians favoring policies to benefit the wealthy. The problem boiled down to this: people tend to vote their economic interests. Even in the wealthy United States, most people earn less than the average income. That means it is in the interest of the majority to vote for politicians promising to redistribute wealth from the top down."

This was said "just right" by Ms. Flanders...it sums up my position on Hiliary also...not to mention to have 2 Clintons and 2 Bushs in the white house reigning supreme for up to 28 years...sounds not only incestuous but nauseating....that is not a true democracy at work.

Which Womanhood? By: Laura Flanders

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion?pid=280397

I wish I felt what Robin Morgan feels. "Our President Ourselves!" she cheers, in a rousing pitch for Hillary Clinton. "We need to rise in furious energy – as we did when courageous Anita Hill was so vilely treated in the US Senate, as we did when desperate Rosie Jimenez was butchered by an illegal abortion, as we did and do for women globally who are condemned for trying to break through."
Morgan asks, "Why should all women not be as justly proud of our womanhood and the centuries, even millennia of struggle that got us this far, as black Americans women and men are justly proud of their struggles?"
I wish I felt her poet's passion for Clinton as a player in the global women's movement, but I don't. Indeed, I'm reminded that there are parts to be proud of in this movement of ours, and less attractive parts, of which Hillary Clinton, I'm sad to say, constantly reminds me.
Morgan recalls how Clinton defied the US State Department and the Chinese Government to speak at the 1995 UN World Conference on Women. I saw Hillary Clinton speak that rainy day in China and her defiance was something of which to be rightly proud. But even as Clinton called for the recognition of women's rights as human rights, the rigged-for-profit trade policies that she supported then and continues to endorse were encouraging a global sweatshop economy that has all but eradicated the right to unionize in most of the world -- a working woman's best protector. (It took her six years to get off the board of the anti-union giant Wal-Mart.)
"For too long the history of women has been a history of silence," Clinton told the World Conference then. But almost exactly a year later, she supported her husband's signing of the so-called Personal Responsibility Act, which successfully shifted responsibility for poverty in an affluent society off that society and onto the backs of poor mothers. Those moms barely got to say a word, while DC pols slandered and steamrollered them.
Clinton writes in her autobiography "Living History" that she would have opposed her husband over welfare reform if she thought it would hurt young children. (One wonders what she thinks happens to kids in poor working and over-working families.) On the campaign trail, she recalls her dedication to Marian Wright Edelman's Children's Defense Fund. But I can't forget Peter Edelman's resignation from the Department of Health and Human Services in protest. In 1996, welfare "reform" cut almost 800,000 legal immigrants off aid entirely and even denied them food stamps, but no one denies that it helped get Bill Clinton re-elected. "Welfare reform became a success for Bill" writes Hillary in "Living History." It was all about politics, not poor people, said Edelman.
And that's the saddening, shaming part of Clinton's record – and the part that reminds me just how often white middle class women have advanced our own fortunes at the expense of other women.
There is a heterogeneous, global, diverse women's movement that has indeed raised women out of servitude and fought – and fought again – for reproductive, economic and social/sexual self-determination as a human right.
But there is also a history of some "womanhood" advancing apart, when the "we" of womanhood became too burdensome. In 1976, when the Hyde Amendment banned most public funding for poor women's abortions, too few of us rose up - but some of us rose in society thanks to obtaining abortions anyway. Today Senator Clinton calls abortion "tragic" and looks for "common ground" with choice's enemies. Later, when every-woman's ERA failed, most of today's politicians moved on. And then, as the "war on drugs" advanced, most female lawyers (including Clinton) carried on rising up, even as thousands of disproportionately poor and drug-addicted women were sent down. Women – as a whole – didn't do much at all, when, in the name of "defending marriage," our government (under President Clinton) banned some women's marriages.
I'd like to believe a female president would be good for the advancement of "womanhood" worldwide. But so far Senator Clinton's votes have not been good for Iraqi, or Palestinian, or a whole lot of global womanhood.
One million dead in Iraq alone. (US forces killed another nine civilians including a child today.) At what cost does one woman prove she's ready for the White House?
The fact is, I'm ready for leadership that means "we" now, not sometime when the wars on "terror" or "drugs" or the "vast right-wing conspiracy" are over. (Or when there's a budget surplus, or a woman in the White House, or maybe after she's won re-election.) And so me and my womanhood are rooting for a movement that might someday build for structural change -- and that kind of leadership. Today, with fingers crossed, I'm voting for Barack (and Michelle) Obama. At least we can call their community organizers' bluff. Or we can go down -- or rise up -- trying.

Liberals got women the right to vote.

Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote.

Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty.

Liberals ended segregation.
Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act.

Liberals created Medicare.Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.

What did Conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things...every one!

So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, Senator, because I will pick up that label and I will

wear it as a badge of honor--

Over at my home blog, my co-blogger MEC informs me that with the issuance of Executive Order 13457, "Protecting American Taxpayers From Government Spending on Wasteful Earmarks",
Bush has broken the law yet again and given himself a line-item veto:
In effect, the Executive Order declares the Bush has the power to reject against any part of the budget passed by Congress that Bush doesn't like: a de facto line-item veto. Never mind that the Supreme Court ruled in 1998 that the Constitution does not permit the president to decide, item by item, which parts of the budget to accept or reject. If Bush doesn't have the power of line-item veto before he signs the budget bill, he doesn't have it afterward, either.
That's not the worst of it. As MEC notes, this Executive Order doesn't go into effect until Fiscal Year 2009 (beginning October 1, 2008). By the time it has any effect (if enforced), Bush will be out of the White House.
In other words, Bush just gave himself the power to decide how the next Administration spends the taxpayers' money.

The Longest Walk 2008
February, 11 - July 11, 2008
4,400 miles

OUR MISSION:

We walk with the message: All Life is Sacred, Save Mother Earth.

We shall walk for the Seventh Generation, for our youth, for peace, for justice, for healing of Mother Earth, for the healing of our people suffering from diabetes, heart conditions, alcoholism, drug addiction, and other diseases.

Through the elements of the seasons, we shall walk through the rain, snow, over mountains, high winds, through the heat and cold, nothing shall deter us from completing our mission: All Life is Sacred, Protect Sacred Sites.

Let those who doubt, hear our pledge. Let those who believe, join our ranks. As we walk the final miles, by our side will be elders, families, children, people of all races, from many walks of life, the old and the new America. All Life is Sacred, Clean Up Mother Earth.

OUR GOAL:

The Clean Up America Campaign is an effort to clean up our country’s highways and roads by collecting debris found along the Longest Walk route. This monumental task will engage Walkers in a global effort at a grassroots level to promote harmony with our delicate environment.

Longest Walk participants will carry specially marked trash bags to separate the collected refuse into trash bins and recycling bins. A rotating team of walkers will pick up trash along the way with trash pokers leaving a health trail of earth in their path.

This is incredible....this is deep and flowing like a river.
